Important Information About the Equifax Data Breach

On September 7, 2017, Equifax reported a significant data breach.  This breach occurred from Mid-May through the end of July.  Sensitive information for approximately 143 million Americans was exposed.  This information included names, social security numbers, addresses, birth dates, and, in some cases driver's license numbers.  Additionally, credit card information for 209,000 people was stolen and dispute documents containing personal information for 182,000 people were also obtained.  Please note - This was not a breach of ECU data and no ECU systems were impacted.

What should I do?

  • Equifax has provided a website for consumers to obtain updated information and to determine if they have been impacted by this breach.  That website is www.equifaxsecurity2017.com.  You may also call the Equifax call center at 866.447.7559.  The call center is available every day (including weekends) from 7:00 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. EST.
  • Equifax will provide a year of free credit monitoring to consumers.  More information can be found at www.equifaxsecurity2017.com.
  • Check credit reports.  Consumers can obtain these for free at www.annualcreditreport.com.
  • Monitor all credit card and online accounts closely for unauthorized activity.
  • Consider placing a credit freeze on credit reports.  This will make it difficult for someone to open credit accounts under your name.  For more information about a credit freeze and the implications of such a freeze, please visit the Federal Trade Commission website at consumer.ftc.gov.  Note - A credit freeze is a more complicated step and requires additional fees by the credit reporting agencies.

At ECU, protecting your personal information is a top priority.  ECU, along with our premier business partners, take all possible precautions to ensure the safety and security of your confidential information.  Our systems are monitored 24 hours a day, seven days a week for fraudulent activity.  If you have questions or concerns about your accounts, please call us at 800.999.2328
