FAQs
What are contactless payments?
Contactless payments use short-range wireless technology to securely complete payments between a contactless-enabled card or payment-enabled device and a contactless-enabled terminal. A Visa® contactless card is a chip card with a near-field communication (NFC) antenna, enabling close-range payments. When cardholders tap to pay with their contactless card at a contactless-enabled terminal (near the Contactless Symbol ), their payment is sent for authorization.
What do the symbols mean?
When shown on a card, the EMVCo Contactless Indicator*means the card has the capability to make contactless payments. When shown at a merchant, it means they accept contactless payments. The EMVCo Contactless Symbol* shows the cardholder where to tap their contactless card or payment-enabled device on the checkout terminal to make a contactless payment.
Is tapping to pay safe?
Yes, Visa® contactless cards are safe for several reasons:
- Each transaction is accompanied by a one-time code that securely protects your payment information, just like a chip card.
- Cardholders can’t pay accidentally. Their card or device must be within 1-2 inches of the contactless-enabled terminal for the transaction to occur (and they won’t be billed twice, even if they accidentally tap twice).
What are the benefits of tapping to pay?
Tapping to pay with a Visa® contactless card is fast and easy — perfect for places like fast-food restaurants, grocery stores, coffee shops, vending machines, taxis, and more.
Tapping to pay is also secure because, just like a chip card, each transaction is accompanied by a one-time code that protects your payment information. Unlike cash, tapping to pay provides an electronic record of your purchases and gives you all the great functionality and convenience of a Visa® card.
Can people “skim” information off a contactless card?
A unique transaction-specific code secures the cardholder’s payment information for every contactless transaction. Due to the nature of the code and additional fraud protection processes, it is difficult to use skimmed cardholder information for fraudulent purchases.
Does the cardholder actually have to tap their card on the contactless-enabled terminal?
No, their card just needs to be close (within 1-2 inches) to the Contactless Symbol.
How should cardholders hold their card to the contactless-enabled terminal?
The checkout terminal reads the antenna best when the contactless card is flat over the Contactless Symbol, not at an angle.
How long must the cardholder hold their card to the contactless-enabled terminal?
They should hold their contactless card to the terminal for 1-2 seconds.
How does this technology compare to mobile wallets like Apple Pay?
Contactless payments, including those made with Visa® contactless cards, Google Pay, and Apple Pay, use the same NFC (Near Field Communication) technology. Samsung Pay, however, works with both NFC technology and MST (Magnetic Secure Transition) technology, which can be used anywhere you can swipe.
Where can cardholders tap to pay with a contactless-enabled card or payment-enabled device?
They can tap to pay where they see the Contactless Symbol at checkout. Millions of merchants worldwide accept contactless payments.
Can I swipe or insert my contactless cards even if I don’t see the Contactless Symbol at checkout?
Yes. If the business does not accept contactless payments, you can swipe or insert your contactless card, just like any other Visa® card.
Can cardholders use their Visa® contactless card outside the U.S.?
Yes, many countries have already adopted contactless payments. Visa® contactless cards can be used anywhere Visa is accepted by tapping it at a contactless-enabled terminal, inserting the card into an EMV chip terminal, or swiping it in a magnetic stripe terminal.
